I walk on the beach every morning, trying to build up my leg strength after the replacement of both of my knees. This week’s gift was finding a starfish about 16” long, He was up in an area where he was vulnerable to being handled by unknowing beach visitors: I couldn’t let that happen. I went out about 3’ in the water and put him down in a rocky tide pool where I’m sure he was happy and would prosper. Mother Ocean fills me with awe every time I go down to see her.
Again from a fan, “This movie should be free, like surfing.” So, I give you all the gift of this movie. It’s given me so much, and I hope it brings you the same joy that it has brought me. Addicted to Joy….the film and all the interviews are now FREE.
I want to continue the story of how some of these surfboards were made. Larry Fuller has been the visionary and the captain of the ship that moves this project forward. The beauty of these surfboards takes your breath away.
Last time we talked a little about how Larry acquired the wood for this project, here’s an example of his commitment to the project.
These are the steps to building one of these wooden surfboards, it’s extensive. I will list them all and then let Reynolds Yater give the on-screen description. Select the wood - mill the wood to proper size - glue it all together - cut the “blank” into a rough shape - CNC machine shape the rough board - take the board apart - chamber the individual pieces to reduce weight - glue it back together, final shape the board - sand it, laminate it - fine sand it - a base coat of resin - add the fins - and finally, final gloss and polish……wow, what a boat load of work.
I did document some of the process, like how one of the boards went together
Most of the boards in the film are made from very rare, sometimes exotic, wood. One of the “stars” of Addicted to Joy is a Giant Sequoia that fell in 1964. Again, this clip shows Larry’s dedication to the project.
Thanks Larry, next time more about some of the processes required to make this project happen. There is so much morer to this story when you watch the film, Aloha!
I want to thank you all for reading Wood Water Soul. I want to announce we have Addicted to Joy and all the interviews are free. Our first coffee cups and T’s are hitting the shelves, thank you. (check out the shirts, coffee cups, tote bags and water bottles ). Please share this Blog with a fellow surfer, or with a friend that needs some Joy in their lives. I invite you to watch, Aloha.
